Ecopoints Project – Recycling ABC – PAR010/FSG

The Recycling ABC is a project design with the aim to promote the preservation of the Environment, through training program teaching good practices in Waste Management, directed to students and the general population, with the purpose to provide the needed techniques to deal with the different types of waste produced on a daily basis, always having in mind the 3Rs theory (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

In the scope of the partnership created with Vodacom for the project Promote Growth, the Gago Foundation, besides mentoring the ABC Recycling program to students, Teachers and cleaning agents, instals Ecopoints in schools for the selective collection of solid waste (plastic, glass, paper and metal) for subsequent recovery through processes of repurposing and eventually recycling.

The project began in 2016 and since 2019, with the three-way partnership between the Gago Foundation, Vodacom Mozambique and the Ministry of Education and Human Development, 65 schools and approximately 70.000 students benefited from this project, within a forecasted goal of 700 schools until the year 2030, meeting the Sustainable Development Goals 2020-2030

The Recycling ABC consists on the presentation of lectures about civic and environmental education as well as waste recycling in the schools. These lectures are presented by and Environment Educator and focus on the reasons for the Environmental preservation and measures that should be adopted to face the waste management. The lectures are presented in the school yard along an exhibit of recycled articles, to bring awareness to the possibilities and the resilience that waste possesses, even after being considered as just garbage.
